Backcountry Skiing
Backcountry skiing is not done at a ski resort,
but rather out in the open. Most anywhere that it
snows heavily you will find backcountry skiers.
Most of them have 4x4 vehicles to get to the difficult
locations as well as their own ski equipment. Backcountry
skiing is not for the inexperienced as you don’t
know what the terrain will offer you. That is part
of the challenge and part of the thrill though.
There are two types of backcountry skiing. Overland
skiing and Mountain skiing. Overland skiing is very
similar to cross country skiing just out in the
open, and mountain skiing is just like Alpine skiing.
Be prepared for mountain skiing because you won’t
have the ski lift to get you to the top. Make sure
physically you are ready for the climb. Your lungs,
legs, and heart may react differently to various
altitudes. Of course some people do decide to use
a snowboard instead of poles for backcountry skiing.
You need to be very safe when participating in
backcountry skiing. It can be challenging and exciting,
but also deadly if you don’t follow the rules.
Avalanche hazards are to be heeded. Be careful later
in the day when the snow may have shifted and melted
during the heat of the day. It is best to participate
in backcountry skiing early in the day and be back
to safety before the late afternoon. This will help
you avoid avalanches as well as give you sufficient
time in the event you get lost.
Always carry food, water, and a two-way radio with
you when you go backcountry skiing. Hydration is
very important as is food for energy levels. It
is wise to always ski with a friend or at least
let someone else know where you will be and when
you plan to return. You should carry supplies in
your vehicle as well including a first aid kit,
shovel, blankets, and a cell phone.
Backcountry skiing is an experience that will take
your breath away. You have the opportunity to ski
in the open with nature and all its beauty. This
type of skiing is best left to those who are in
excellent physical condition and who are skilled
in various skiing techniques.
